What is The
Stick Camp?
by Guillermo
Cides, director of The Stick Center
Years
ago I had the dream of making music with more musicians.
However, the options that I found for this, were
always in environments not very suitable for the
music, disregarding the human relationship.
Following the premise "if you don't find what
you look for, do it yourself", I decided to
create The Stick Camp, an alternative form of the
Stick Seminars in Europe.
Now I have what I looked for.
This means a meeting of musicians in a natural place,
where there is not anybody that knows
more than the others, but rather that somebody knows
it before.
This concept is fundamental to impart instruction,
especially when we speak about the Stick, an instrument
where the ways to play are not even definitive,
luckily.
For this reason, we understand as "instructor"
to the one that, because of his experience, knows
a time before what the apprentice will know anyway.
This
will be our second edition.
The first one was fantastic: there was a lot of
music there; we all have made friends; in a kind
of vacations, with afternoons of works, swimming
pool, playing music under the trees; and, of course,
nights of concerts -and some beers too-.
This
type of seminars, given first among the stickists,
will surely be a starting point for other seminars
in the world.
It is that the music cannot be given otherwise that
the natural one. You are welcome,
being a beginner Stickist or an experienced one.

Where?
The Stick Camp
is a project that takes place in a natural space
as it is a field, where we can lodge and make there
all the possible musical activities. In that same
place, we share dialogues and learnings, we tell
each other our experiences.
The editions are made in a field on the outskirts
of Valls (city that belongs to the county of Tarragona,
Spain) in a place called "The Masia of Pere".
This is a place where, besides the Stick Camp, other
activities are developed during the year: meetings
of young volunteers of all Europe for works of community
help, permaculture, recycle, among other things.
Our seminar sometimes coincides with some of these
activities.
Although it is a natural space, with lodging and
included foods, this work is carried out with the
seriousness and responsibility that implies the
fact of to be responsible of people.
Many of the assisting musicians come from different
countries. Besides the musical and instruction activities,
we will incorporate this year 2003 tourist visits
to near places.
We make to coincide our Stick Camp with San Juan's
party, a very typical celebration of Spain where
during several days, the city celebrates with cultural
activities and parties.
